Rachel Maddow breaks it down so simply that an 8th grader could understand it:

  1. ExxonMobil is more profitable than Walmart, Google, McDonald’s, American Express and Goldman Sachs combined
  2. Exxon’s fine for the oil Pegasus Pipeline spill in Arkansas is only a tiny fraction of its daily profit
  3. Again, Exxon paid just a tiny fraction of its daily profit for the entire Yellowstone oil spill

This begs (at least) three questions: Why does the U.S. Government even subsidize oil companies in the first place? Why doesn’t our government have more serious fines for oil spills? AND ARE WE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE?!? REALLY? NO, REALLY?

The Keystone Pipeline will absolutely, positively spring a leak already has sprung several leaks

The oil industry has no clue how to clean up or prevent the leaks and they aren’t even exploring new technologies for oil spill clean ups

The KXL Pipeline will go through a MAJOR clean water drinking aquifer. Is America so stupid to “drill baby drill” that we’re willing to endanger our most valuable non-renewable resource —water— for a finite fossil fuel that wind and solar tech will ultimately replace?

Yes, America really may be that stupid

Wow. Just wow.

White House Petition of the Day: ‘Ignition (Remix)’ as the National Anthem
The latest petition from the White House’s We The People forum calls on the Obama administration to make R. Kelly’s 2003 R&B hit “Ignition (Remix)” the new national anthem of the United States. Since its creation on March 3, the petition has managed to receive more than 5,300 signatures of its 100,000 goal in the first 72 hours.

There go my hopes for an Obama “Big Block of Cheese Day.”
I’m sorry. I love the song, but this is absurd. Petitions for real political change don’t get enough signatures to even get on the table, but this (and the Death Star petition…which I think is the reason they upped the signature count to 100,000) happens. I’m all for humor, but THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!

Anti-Choice “Medical Experts” Play Increasing Role in Abortion Legislation Testimony

As anti-choice state legislators introduce more and more abortion restrictions, the testimony for and against such bills is becoming increasingly important in influencing final votes. In some cases, such as the recent Indiana medication abortion law hearing, the divide between real science and anti-choice “science” is clear when anti-choicers are unable to find even one practicing medical professional to show up to defend the bill, while opponents are able to recruit numerous doctors to discuss its problems.

“As part of his ongoing attempt to restrict abortion access to low-income women, Alaska Sen. John Coghill recently video conferenced national medical professionals to testify in a recent committee hearing; they all claimed abortion is never medically necessary and is harmful to a woman’s physical and mental health.”

Just to be clear, John Coghill is a state senator. Not that that makes his remarkes any the less abhorrent (or scary, since the Alaska Senate is even more conservative and crazy than many of our more national figures). I just wanted to clear any possible mis-representaiton.
Although it should be noted that Sen. Murkowski doesn’t support abortion in any circumstance either so…there’s that.
